Ya-Yuan's "Miscellaneous Woods" Triumphs with Bronze A' Design Award

Reception Center Design Merges Nature with Architectural Elegance

Inspired by Kengo Kuma, Ya-Yuan Interior Design Service Co. crafts a harmonious blend of nature and architecture in their award-winning "Miscellaneous Woods" project.

Embracing the philosophy of renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, Ya-Yuan Interior Design Service Co. has reimagined the relationship between urban structures and the natural environment. Their latest creation, "Miscellaneous Woods," is a reception center that stands as a testament to this symbiotic vision. The design has been recognized with a prestigious Bronze A' Design Award, highlighting its innovative approach to integrating natural elements within architectural spaces.

The core of "Miscellaneous Woods" lies in its five foundational principles: natural materials, weakening, superposition, gap, and softness. These elements converge to form a digital grille installation, reminiscent of a forest, that graces the front of the reception center. This unique feature not only interprets nature but also serves as a striking visual identity for the building. The design team, led by Feng-Huang Pan, Yuan-Sheng Chen, and Jyun-Yao Hu, has taken on the challenge of redefining traditional architectural forms by deconstructing the 'box' to achieve a balanced visual aesthetic.

Constructed with a deep respect for the surrounding ecosystem, "Miscellaneous Woods" utilizes natural materials such as cypress, paint, and architectural concrete. The design strategically considers the angle of sunlight and air circulation to create an organic form that seamlessly blends with the environment. The digital grille installation not only sets the mood but also evokes the feeling of walking through a forest trail.

The technical specifications of the project reveal a meticulous attention to detail. Spanning over 4,175.2 square meters, the single-story building covers an area of 1,342.1 square meters. A strategic shift of the entrance to the wider side of the site invites visitors to fully engage with the digital grille and experience the beauty of the 'miscellaneous woods' upon arrival. The minimalist interior echoes the exterior's style, with large spaces and deconstructed elements that reduce excessive ornamentation.

Functionality in "Miscellaneous Woods" is achieved through softening, a concept that marries art with science. The architects have honored the owner's desire to preserve the original structure while infusing the building with natural elements. This gentle integration maximizes the presence of nature and fosters a connection between the building, its owner, and the residents.

Completed in February 2023 in Taiwan, the project is a culmination of extensive research and creative exploration. The use of natural cypress and the simulation of tree branch structures result in a staggered yet aesthetically cohesive design. The disassembled roof creates transitional spaces, allowing the building's volume to exhibit dynamic layers and changes throughout the day.

Overcoming the challenge of dismantling, the design team has successfully crafted a space that resonates with the tranquility of an art gallery and the essence of returning to nature. The design's integration with its environment is both natural and organic, setting a new standard for reception centers.

With its minimalist, white, sculptural form set against a verdant landscape, "Miscellaneous Woods" stands as a modern-day architectural marvel. The project's success is a testament to Ya-Yuan Interior Design Service Co.'s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and their ability to create spaces that are both functional and artistically profound.
